11 inmates from the Kerevat Juvenile Centre in East New Britain province broke out from the prison compound last week.
NGI Police boss ACP Anton Billy said the break out happened on Friday night during a heavy downpour. ACP Billy said the juveniles escaped from the roof top and dashed for freedom.
Correctional Service Acting Commissioner Stephen Pokanis confirmed the escape saying two officers on duty at the time of the escape have been suspended.
Acting Commissioner Pokanis said the officers were suspended on Sunday when the investigations commenced. Mr Pokanis said they are yet to establish how the escape really happened.
“Whether it was a planned escaped or negligence by the officers, only the investigations will reveal, “said Mr Pokanis.
ACP Billy stressed that juvenile inmates must not be underestimated with security present at all times. He appealed to locals in the area to assist police and CS report anything suspicious.
He added that police personnel have been boosted and on the look-out for these escapees at large.
