BARKER: A LOT OF MSMEs GROW ON THE BACK OF SOCIAL NETWORKING

“A lot of MSMEs using e-commerce to deliver goods and services are really being able to grow on the back of the internet, particularly Facebook because it is a good platform for marketing because it is more interactive and you able to get quick responses,” said Mr. Barker.

Facebook has been the talk in politics lately, although it is still not clear whether it will be banned for a month or not, all will have to agree that it is a good platform for a lot of things, including business like for the Micro, Small to Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The Executive Director of the PNG Institute of National Affairs (PNGINA) Mr. Paul Barker says thanks to the introduction of Information Communication Technology (ICT), most start-ups in the MSME sector have grown.

Some of the products local MSMEs sell on display at a recent expo in Port Moresby.

“A lot of MSMEs using e-commerce to deliver goods and services are really being able to grow on the back of the internet, particularly Facebook because it is a good platform for marketing because it is more interactive and you able to get quick responses,” said Mr. Barker.

Mr. Barker said if the national government is serious about supporting the growth of the MSME sector, it should make decisions that will benefit them especially when it has made the commitment to have 500, 000 MSMEs in place in the country by the next decade.
