The PNG Defense Force 1st Battalion will touch down in Mt. Hagen, Western Highlands tomorrow morning as the army takes measures to assist police in Mendi to curb the lawlessness.
The army’s Chief of Staffs, Captain (Navy) Philip Polewara confirmed the deployment to be made consisting of men from the Taurama Army Barracks in Port Moresby.
“It will be a battalion so there should be over a hundred men sent to Mendi to provide assistance,” he said.
The focus is to provide additional manpower on ground to protect the people, the government facilities, and business houses and restore peace and order in Mendi.
Chaos struck Mendi town yesterday following the outcome of an election petition case that was held in Port Moresby, where the case against the incumbent Governor William Powi, was dismissed by the National Court.
This then lead to a protest in Mendi town that turned ugly when protestors started destroying properties, including burning a Link PNG airline on the tarmac.
