IMMIGRATION AND PNGDF OFFICERS ARRESTED OVER DRINK DRIVING

"The behaviour of the two soldiers were disgraceful and unacceptable especially from a discipline organization."

Two PNG Immigration officers and two PNG Defence Force soldiers were amongst 7 people arrested by Manus police over the weekend.

Manus Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector David Yapu said they were arrested by Police on Special Easter Operations on Saturday for drink driving in a motor vehicle in Lorengau town.

PPC Yapu said he was frustrated to see the PNG Immigration officers with PNGDF Soldiers including civilians drinking alcohol and driving around in a hired vehicle  intended for the use for Refugee Operations on Manus Island but have abused and misused the vehicles for drinking spree.

Yapu said they drove to a resident of an officer working with PTB at Pukpuk Bridge at ward 1 and assaulted him and damage his properties without any lawful reasons.

He said the behaviour of the two soldiers were disgraceful and unacceptable especially from a discipline organization.

The two PNG Immigration officers were charged for permitting person’s to drink on moving motor vehicle whilst the two PNGDF Soldiers were charged for 3 counts of assault,damaging properties and drinking on moving vehicle.

They will appear in Lorengau District court tomorrow.

PPC Yapu commended his officers with Mobile Squad 02 for good work during their Easter Operations and also thanked the people of Manus for their common sense and maturity for celebrating the Easter peacefully in the Province.
