NO SECURITY BUDGET FOR LLG ELECTIONS

"I would expect the Department of Police to secure that funding separately from the operational budget to provide security,” said Electrol Commissioner Patilias Gamato."

There is no budget for security operations for the Local Level Government elections with expectations from the police to come up with its own budget for the operations.

“There is no budget for security in the funding that we have, but I would expect the Department of Police to secure that funding separately from the operational budget to provide security,” said Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato.

Electoral Commissioner Gamato said as with the funding, the Government has released last week another K20 million component of the approved K100 million that was allocated by the Government for the conduct of LLG Elections only.

This allocation does not include Security aspects of the LLG Elections.

However, the Deputy Police Commissioner Chief of Operations Jim Andrews said police do not have budget for operations of such.

“This is unbudgeted operations; we don’t have the money for LLG elections. Police rely heavily on the Electoral Commission, because they are the ones who are budgeted to conduct this kind of elections”, said Mr Andrews.

He said it’s the responsibility of the EC to give the money and police will support them for the elections through-out the country.

“Without that we don’t have the money,” Mr Andrews stressed.

He said if the EC does not provide funding, they will have to submit a special request to the government to give the funds.

“It’s not budgeted in our recurrent budget and it has to come from the government, if the Electoral Commission is not going to help us, “he said.
