Nominations for the 2019 Local-Level Government elections officially open tomorrow, Thursday, 27 June 2019 at 4:00pm throughout the country.
Electoral Commission Patilias Gamato said all 20 provincial electoral officials nationwide will start accepting nominations starting at 4:00pm.
“Nomination fee is K200 and intending candidates are encouraged to call into any of the designated nomination venues in your respective provinces and districts to nominate and contest.”
“All nomination fees must be paid through any Bank South Pacific (BSP) outlet as no cash payments will be accepted for security reasons.”
Mr. Gamato said that for those candidates who have already paid their nomination fees through bank deposit and are holding onto the deposit slip butts only need to present them to the returning officers and nominate.
Mr. Gamato outlines the new revised dates for the 2019 LLG elections as follows:
Nominations Open and Campaign Starts: Thursday, 27 June 2019
Nominations Close: Thursday, 4 July 2019
Polling & Counting Start: Saturday, 20 July 2019
Polling & Counting End: Thursday, 25 July 2019
Return of Writs: Friday, 26 July 2019
Nomination period is six (6) days, campaign period is 14 days and polling and counting is six (6) days.
“Election time period has been shortened, therefore, from the day nominations open to the end of polling and counting, the Commission has approximately 21 days to conduct the 2019 LLG elections.”
Meanwhile, Commissioner Gamato said that there are some unresolved legal issues surrounding certain wards in certain electorates and Kandep is one of them.
“For Kandep district, an application has been filed to have the number of wards increased from 36 to 52 and a decision on the matter is still pending in court.”
“As such, writs for these wards in Kandep will be put on hold until such time the matter is cleared by the court.”
