With Papua New Guinea having just hosted one of the most significant events in its history and setting itself firmly on the path to becoming a well-established global player,Digicel is already seeing the benefits that the staging of APEC promised.
Referencing an air of optimism in Papua New Guinea as a result of APEC and a strong sense of an acceleration in foreign direct investment, Oliver Coughlan, CEO of Digicel Papua New Guinea, comments; “Digicel commends the Government on its fiscal management over the past 12 months. It is no small task to host APEC, but under the leadership of the O’Neill/Abel Government, funding beyond expectations was secured to improve infrastructure which will benefit the people of PNG.”
With talk at the Summit focusing heavily on the importance of the ongoing development of communications infrastructure in PNG and the attendant benefits in terms of economic gains, job creation, improved skill levels, enhanced foreign investment and stronger opportunities for SMEs to develop and grow, the arrival of the Coral Sea 2 Cable in early 2020 will enable significant technology expansion making cloud-based solutions and the Internet of Things (IoT) an accessible and transformational reality for businesses of all sizes.
“As a global company that has made significant investments in key infrastructure in PNG over the past 11 years, we’re pleased to see a marked improvement in economic confidence in the country. Central to this is the increased availability of FX which we attribute to the prudent management and strategic planning by the Government and the Central Bank which in turn allows Digicel to further invest in our network throughout PNG and bring the benefits of transformational technologies to people and businesses across the length and breadth of the country.”
