WARD COUNCILOR CONCERNED ABOUT THE ABUSE OF INTERNET BY STUDENTS

“Locals are concerned that school children are accessing and sharing pornographic materials, which is likely to cause them to commit unwelcome actions towards women and girls in the villages.”

A Ward Councilor in the Nabak Local Level Government (LLG) area in Morobe province, is concerned that school aged children are accessing illicit sites on the internet and could have a negative impact in the community.

Ward 6 Councilor Mr. Ting Esoke said, “Locals are concerned that school children are accessing and sharing pornographic materials, which is likely to cause them to commit unwelcome actions towards women and girls in the villages.”

Esoke said youngsters mostly under the age of 20, while attending Primary Schools are using their literacy skills on high-tech mobile phones to access internet and mobile applications to view and share pornographic materials while in school and at home.

He said about 9 students were apprehended and counselled earlier this year by a village based rehabilitation committee and were warned not get involved again in such activities. However, there are claims that children are still doing it.

The ward 6 Rehabilitation Center, a community based organization is currently dealing with the Police and other Law Enforcement Agencies to deal effectively with this issue of great concern.
