Newcrest’s CEO and Managing Director Sandeep Biswas has arrived in Port Moresby, where he will join Keli Taureka (Executive Manager, Newcrest PNG) in welcoming hundreds of CEOs arriving from around the world for the APEC CEO Summit 2018.  Mr Taureka is also the Chairman of the APEC CEO Summit, and will host the international delegates for a welcome reception on Thursday evening, on the deck of the Pacific Explorer.

Newcrest was the first to sign up as a Platinum Sponsor for the APEC CEO Summit earlier this year.

“An event like APEC is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for PNG to showcase its credentials as a vibrant investment destination” said Mr Biswas.  “As a long-running operator in PNG, Newcrest wants to stand alongside the Government as it tells PNG’s story to the world.  We have a strong interest in seeing PNG succeed, not just at hosting APEC, but in its broader aspirations for development and prosperity.”

“I congratulate the Government and people of PNG for the work that has gone into hosting this world‑class event.”

Mr Biswas will address the CEO Summit on the theme of “Managing Resources; Securing the Future”, highlighting the socio-economic benefits that can flow from the mining industry when it is developed in an inclusive and sustainable way.

“At Newcrest, we are confident that our mining operations deliver real, tangible results for the economies and communities where we operate, well beyond the obvious contributions through tax and royalty payments, critical infrastructure, foreign exchange, and GDP growth.”

“Sustainability underpins everything we do.  Ensuring our operations deliver sustainable, inclusive results to our host governments and communities, while protecting the environment, makes our operations stronger, more productive and more resilient.”

The CEO Summit takes place at the peak of the APEC year, immediately prior to the Leaders’ Meeting.  Participants will include many APEC Leaders and Ministers; speakers from the world’s top companies; and hundreds of CEOs from across the Asia-Pacific region.

In a business briefing on 31 October, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill urged Papua New Guinean businesses to make the most of the CEO Summit. “That’s where the action is”, he said. “It is our chance to put forward our investment potential.  CEOs from the Fortune 500 companies will be there, and they need to know about the investment opportunities we have in PNG.”

The CEO Summit features two days of interactive discussions, presentations and dialogues, centered around the theme: “Inclusion in the Age of Disruption: Charting a Common Future”.  Discussions will consider ways to create inclusive and sustainable growth that empowers workers and communities across the APEC region. The Summit will discuss themes such as connectivity and regional integration; digitisation and innovation; MSME growth; and developing the workforce of the future.
