It is a sight that stands out in its surrounding just on the outskirts of Port Moresby in the Kira Kira village area, the newly completed state of the art Butuka Academy.
Boasting world class classrooms and building – and built at a cost of K70 million, the Butuka Academy was officially opened today by President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China.
APEC Minister and Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko thanked the Chinese people and government for the facility which will cater for 3, 200 students every year, from elementary prep straight to grade 12 in the same facility.
“This school before was in a derelict state and falling apart and now, with your assistance, with the sister city partnership between China’s Shenzhen City and the National Capital District Commission (our capital city authority); we have got one of the best schools in the country and in the Pacific.”
Minister Tkatchenko added, “This is a state-of-the-art school and we are very privileged too that primary and secondary levels will be taught Mandarin.”
Meanwhile, it is understood the former students of Butuka and those in nearby Moresby South district will be given priority in enrolling for next year.
The Butuka Academy will be open for normal school operations in February of 2019.
